She shared with us her life story, from her childhood through her career as an educator and politician, and her subsequent activities in retirement. Janet Gilliand – Oral History
Janet spoke at the Historic Society member meeting on February 18, 2024. Her family has been in Longwood since the 1940s, in its fifth generation now. They purchased a property along the north shore of Lake Ruth, which now is essentially a family compound with multiple houses where several generations live. She recalls her early years in Longwood and seeing the landscape evolve around their once-country oasis.

Over the years many of them were restored by the Longwood Historic Society. When I started doing this youtube project I knew I wanted to learn the history of these buildings. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to look far for information. The Longwood Historic Society has a lovely walking tour on its website. If you live nearby or are just visiting stop by and enjoy a self-guided tour of our town’s history.

We also visit Lady Liberty the sister tree to the Senator. Find out how an act of arson destroyed this one-of-a-kind tourist attraction and see what is being done to preserve what is left.
